Mexican Flan by Cookies: Strain Review

Intro / Lineage / Back story

Gonna try the strain Mexican Flan by Cookies. I bought this eighth in Fairview Heights, Illinois, at the Ascend Dispensary early this year. It’s my oldest eighth. I’ve had it laid away for much of the year. Will it still be any good?

This will not be my first time trying the strain known as Mexican Flan, which is a cross between Ice Cream Cake and Animal Mints. Those are a couple of strains I have had “on their own.” And I like both of them. Ice Cream Cake has been a pleasant, chill indica vibe while Animal Mints has some muscle to it.

I bought a bag of Mexican Flan—also sold under the Cookies brand—in Ruidoso, New Mexico at some point in 2023 or early 2024. It wasn’t anything special. But I chalk that up to the New Mexico market being uneven. Whoever was growing Cookies strains in New Mexico would not be the same entity growing Cookies in Illinois. I understand that it’s Revolution growing Cookies strains in Illinois. This review is about the bag I bought in Illinois.

An eighth is 3.5 grams. Come on, Revolution. This is woeful.
Weigh-In

They shorted me on the bag. It weighed in at 3.35 grams. No bueno. The bag had a package date of 1.17.2024. I opened it about eleven months later. I had it stashed away and kind of forgot how old it was. Even so. Even if some moisture evaporated out of the bag (it’s a sealed bag), a weigh in of 3.35 when it should be 3.5 or 3.54 grams is a big disappointment. The flower wasn’t even dry. The bag was effectively sealed. They just shorted me. Cookies/Revolution, please put 3.5 grams in the bag. I paid for 3.5 grams. Moving on…

Effects Take 1

The grind was really nice. The third-of-a-gram joint I rolled smoked really nice. Flavor? Eh. Maybe there was a sweetness, relative to how marijuana smoke would typically taste. Maybe my perception is being influence by the name of the strain, Mexican Flan, a dessert strain.

Head rush. I will always note whether or not there is flavor but my emphasis is always going to be on the effects. This Flan already has me putting pen to paper, never a bad thing. I am listening to a bowl game, the Cure Bowl from Orlando. Ohio leading Jacksonville State 30-20.

I turned up the thermostat. I’d been keeping it at 65° down here. Too cold. Colder air doesn’t hold moisture as well. There has been condensation on the windows. The metal frames, the trim. Where is the moisture coming from? We moved into this house six weeks ago and we are still figuring out how it operates. Maybe there’s moisture coming through the floor. There is no sump pump.

The Mexican Flan has been a nice smoke. Similar in effect to Butterscotch Bacio. It’s been a heady high for half an hour, a full hour? I plugged the dehumidifier in. We’re using some kilowatts today. This house needs sun when it’s cold.

I was shorted on bag weight by Cookies/Revolution. Yet, this Mexican Flan was a winner.
Effects Take 2

Partaking again at a later date…

Flan, the write-up, last joint before the storm.

That was your approach. Name your flan. Winter storm warning. So it begins. Check the radar! The Flan is a year old, almost. Nothing against it. Or maybe I was unenthusiastic because I had a sack of Mexican Flan from New Mexico a year ago and it didn’t impress so I had no motivation to open the bag when other options remained. I had had Mexican Flan, I was thinking, why try it again? Why not try something new?

This bag was much better than the bag I bought out West earlier this year. I am not going to make much of that. I’ve gotten some great weed in New Mexico. Butterscotch Bacio from High Noon Cult. Trap Island from R Greenleaf. A Grape Stomper pre-roll from I’m not sure who (Pecos Valley). The Trainwreck from Oddfellow.

But this Mexican Flan from Illinois has disappeared on me. I’m settling into a lounge vibe relax mode for the rest of the night. Last of the Flan. Ice Cream Cake x Animal Mints. How could you go wrong?

  1. Oh dude Revolution screwed up 4-5 months of Cookies Harvests in IL. Especially the Mexican Flan, it’s marked down on clearance for 28.50$ at Rise, Niles. I bought 2 1/8ths because I’ve bought over a 1/2 pound of this strain over the 2014 winter and spring, but my end of August all the Revolution grown Cookie strains were getting put on clearance, all Cookie strains have been on sale for over 4 months straight at 30-35% off.

I risked it today again, because I strayed away until a 27% THCA batch came back in stock, but it was worst than the 23% THCa batch 2 months prior. I give up, hey at least I got a Quarter of big nugs for $60, it just isn’t sticky or stinky like it used to be to be.
