Jar Opening and First Impressions
Opening an eighth of the strain Orange Malt as grown by Crops. The buds are cured, resiny, sticky in a way that the buds in the last jar I opened (Purple Milk from Aeriz) were not. There is an orange peel aroma, no doubt. After breaking up some of the bud for grinding, there was a nice sweet-and-sour citrus orange resin smell on my fingers.
Good smoke, good burn. The orange flavor is there but not heavy. I like this Orange Malt. This is the high I’ve been looking for. Uplifted and plucky. No bite? More placid than racy. Is this what it feels like to be malted?
The high on some of the other orange strains can be too racy. I thought once it was the Tangie in the lineage of the orange strains, or the Kalifornien. Source: Seedfinder (click here for the Tangie lineage).
It’s been a couple hours since I burned and I have to stop and ask myself, Is the Orange Malt the only thing I have smoked this evening? It is. Wow, good ride, carry. Never was too bitey. Malty sativa, Maltese falcon.

Second Session
The Orange Malt yields such a pleasant high. Late Saturday morning and I ain’t got to go nowhere. I ran four miles this morning. There is an aura, a halo. Skin buzzy. A sativa hiding behind the curtain.
My mind is very clear despite sipping a little vodka. Body high, buzzy, not heavy, no rabbit hole, or maybe only briefly.
Re-up with the Malt? I don’t have any rolls I haven’t smoked. I’m burning through this eighth. Yet again a strain that wins for me is a sativa. Sativas scare me sometimes but I can usually hold them back with a stun-gun of vodka sippers. This Malt doesn’t stone me like Durban or Diesel. And it’s less racy than the Gelato/Sherb indicas.
I believe the lineage is Mimosa x Ice Cream Cake. (Source: Illinois News Joint, click here). There is Tangie in the Mimosa, but there’s also Lemon Skunk and Grand Daddy Purple in there. Lemon Skunk has been a reliable mellow sativa for me before. Ice Cream Cake is Gelato 33 x Wedding Cake. It’s a nice mix, nice result.
The flavor is different smoking it out of a glass bowl. That doughy flavor, malt maybe. I got more orange flavor from the joint but it’s a great smoke out of the bowl.
As an aside, I must stop to say that this is another instance of the glass bowl delivering a creamy-flavored, or maybe creamy-textured smoke, which I don’t seem to encounter as often or maybe not ever when I smoke joints. I really like the creamy flavor/texture but smoking from glass does irritate my throat in a way that joints don’t. Go figure. When I smoke from glass I get a little scratchy tickle in the back of my throat about an hour later that makes me want to cough. I have tried keeping my glass clean, I’ve tried hemp wick, I can’t seem to eliminate this unfortunate annoying side-effect from glass bowl smoking. Anyone out there have any ideas?

02.16.2025: More Orange Malt
Another great Orange Malt session. That stuff is amazing. Unassuming. Like what you would get from your best 1:1 THC:CBD gummy. No bite, not racy. What are the noids? It had me cleaning, casual, affable. What a great smoke. And it carries for three hours.
Eventually I’m going to re-up with something else, something heavy but it’s 6 pm on a Sunday and I just got a lot of tedious work done, the Malt still running through my veins. It helps me feel capable, ready, open, flexible. What more can you ask for? It’s not trippy, it’s not spacey, it’s not really a high-idea smoke. It’s a get-shit-done bowl of get-after-it.
This is a Strain of the Year candidate. It has me thinking about what other strains are made from crossing Ice Cream Cake with a sativa. Because I like Ice Cream Cake a lot. Pleasant high, makes me curious and happy. But the Orange Malt has more energy behind it. Also makes me interested in the other parent, Mimosa. You can get “straight-up” Mimosa. You can get Clementine, too. I’m intrigued.
Let me take this moment to appeal to the Crops brand, owned by Justice Co. I see that Crops is on the menu in Troy, IL and in Maryville, IL (until just now I did not realize there was a dispensary in Maryville… I am never up that way). I go through Sauget, IL, or can, on a regular basis. Please send some Crops drops back to Beyond/Hello. I have supported Crops on the Beyond/Hello menu but there hasn’t been any new Crops dropped in Sauget all year. I have had your Orange Malt, Donny Burger, Lime OG, etc. I will buy it if you get it back on the Beyond/Hello menu. And with that, I am out—
