The Fizz by Psycho Somatic

I bought a gram of a strain called The Fizz when I was in Ruidoso, New Mexico last week. It was one of seven grams I bought, all of them different, as I put together something of a sampler pack. The Fizz was grown by Psycho Somatic, a grower I had not heard of until I was browsing the New Mexico menus in advance of my trip through the state en route Tucson from Missouri. The New Mexico recreational/dispensary scene seems volatile even ephemeral compared to what seem like more stable menus and growers from year to year so far in Illinois and Missouri. But that’s a story for another day.

I was not sure what the lineage of The Fizz was when I bought it. I was not familiar with any strain being called The Fizz. I plugged the name into my go-to lineage database (Seedfinder.eu, link here) but that query returned zero results. I stopped the inquiry there, and went ahead with the purchase anyway. I wanted to try all the different growers on the menu. Another Psycho Somatic option I was considering (Pineapple Donut) was not recognized as a strain on Seedfinder either, so I stuck with The Fizz. I have since researched the lineage further, and I cover that toward the end of the post. First, though, my notes from a couple of sessions puffing on The Fizz.

Exactly a gram of The Fizz from R Greenleaf in Ruidoso, NM. Cost was $14.20.

First Foray

We had arrived in Tucson after spending the prior night in Ruidoso, where I bought The Fizz among other strains. I had smoked some of High Noon Cult’s Banana Macaroon on the road (strain review here) but six hours later I was unpacked, settled in, and ready to smoke again. I reached into the bag of six other grams and pulled The Fizz blindly. I ground up .17 grams and packed my glass one-ee. It was a tight nug, which smelled good once I ground it up, skunky and grassy.

The smoke was pleasant but I didn’t detect many flavor notes. It tasted white, that white crystal flavor, like some White Widow I had earlier this year, which is interesting because The Fizz and White Widow do seem to share Brasilien/Brazil landrace as a common ancestor. The weed burned well. Not harsh. No cough, no sneeze.

The Fizz. It’s pleasant. I am riffing, it’s riffable. Riff me a riddle, pick me out a winner, Riffy. Strong high, controllable. Makes me want a cigarette, phone-y. Wanting to reach out and drunk dial, which is OK. An hour later I was still thrumming, still awake, my mother in law playing the piano, the NCAA tourney in full swing. The Fizz was good, solid, no complaints…

Got so high the second time smoking The Fizz that I took this picture, and I’m not sure why.

Second Swing

For my second time smoking The Fizz I rolled up a .3g joint. It had a fruity smell once I ground it up. The grind was even and made for a nice roll… This is what I wrote exactly as I wrote it, yesterday afternoon, March 24, 2025, in Tucson, Arizona, U.S.A.com:

It’s getting a bit late for first smoke of the day but there it is. About to take a dip in the pool. Hesitant to puff first but yolo.

What’s it gonna be, though? Mason jar with joints upon opening stanks real good. Gonna burn a The Fizz. Sativa. Could make me cold in the pool but should give me ride.

The Fizz. Whew. Head rush. Menthol, fruity taste. Sharp. A spitter. It’s early on. There is a bite, I’m phishing my own brain. Acceptable only in small doses. Notice how Buddhist meditation is not about self-searching, or soul-searching. It’s the opposite. There is no self, there is no soul. We will return to the nothingness from whence we came. Somehow that still doesn’t do it for me. Buddhism offers never-ending life as long as you are willing not to be you. The Fizz!

Soul spelunking, trippy high, face in the mirror, wide-arc. Or maybe it’s just the circumstances. Reset-ing.

The Fizz is apt. It comes on like a soda fizzing when you pour it. And I’m still bubbling, got bubbles coming up. But it is letting up. Took a quick swim, the sun is strong. Listening to music. The temp warm but perfect, late March. It can be cold here in March, some years.

Gonna open a Connected Tropical Z soon. Nugs look good, seven or eight, chiseled, dark green, red hairs, manufacturing date of 7.16.24. I bought it at Trulieve Blenman Elm 9.12.24 or so. Sativa-leaning but anytime there is a Z it seems a nod to Zkittles, what I consider to be indica, and which has knocked me out. July 4 Blue Zkittlez joint, but also alcohol at a friend’s house, he had a few bottles of this and that nicer bourbon. I once did enjoy some Durban Z, a cross of Durban and what once was called Skittles, then they just put Zs on the Ss. The Fizz passes the pen to paper test, and is there any test more important?

The Fizz has carry. Solid stuff. I don’t need to smoke again real soon…

The view we had from a rental not far from my in-laws’ a few years ago, looking south or southeast toward Tucson from Catalina Foothills.

Lineage

I believe The Fizz to be the result of crossing Sherb Cake with Strawberry Guava. The breeder is Bloom Seed Co. I reference this site apparently out of Spain, offering The Fizz seeds, which it labels as being indica leaning. Which is curious because on the menu in Ruidoso, Somatic or Psycho Somatic’s The Fizz is listed as a sativa, with 31% THC and “energizing” effects.

When I search for “The Fizz” on a notable search engine, the first result is a dispensary and grower I know from Missouri, Proper Cannabis. My buddy works for them and he recalled The Fizz right away as being a strain Proper has sold in its stores. The Proper site (link here) does not specifically identify The Fizz as a sativa, an indica, or a hybrid. But it does concur that the lineage is Sherb Cake crossed with Strawberry Guava. In describing the strain, they write, “Creamy strawberry cake and tropical fruits will guide you into blissful relaxation.”

Sherb Cake is Sunset Sherb x Wedding Cake.

Strawberry Guava (also from Bloom Seed co) is, in their words, “a cross of 14er StrawNana and a rare cut of Papaya.” Link here. The Strawberry Banana grandparent brings in old-school building blocks of Ghost OG, Skunk, Haze, and Indiana Bubblegum. The Papaya also comes from landrace-y old school names of KC 33 (Thailand x Brasilien) crossed with the Afghani indica. Notice, then, that the Guava behind The Fizz is not the pheno of Gelato called Guava (Gelato #25). So, it’s fair to say that The Fizz hails from some older, basic building-block ancestors which these days makes it pretty unusual. I can’t recall seeing KC 33 come up in my research into strain lineages.
